Check out the Google Streetview of the pre-renovation Oakland, Maryland Sheetz:
Anyone else gas up their first car at this Sheetz?
As the saying goes, nothing is permanent but change but I can’t help but get a little nostalgic thinking back to the crazy days of high school. Sheetz was definitely the meeting place!
I’m sure many of you have heard about Google Streetview but, if not, let me quickly explain that Google has sent specialized vehicles around the world to capture panoramic images of public locations that have then been used to create 360-degree interactive maps. Over the past 8 years, Google has captured over 5 million miles of roads and has recorded images on all 7 continents.
To find available StreetView locations, you would go to Google Maps at www.GoogleMaps.com and drag the yellow ‘pegman’ character (located in the bottom right corner) towards a road on the map. If the road becomes highlighted in blue, there are StreetView images available for that location. If you drop the pegman on one of the blue roads, that spot is where you will begin to see the detailed 360-degree StreetView images. Pegman can be tricky so be sure to drop him exactly on a blue highlighted road.
Once you see the StreetView, you can navigate as if you were traveling the road by clicking in any direction to move your position and by clicking and holding to look up, down, left or right. Go ahead … I’ll wait … I know you want to see if you can find your house…
Now that you’re back and looking at the downtown Oakland map, we can see that these images were captured by Google in 2008/2009. I can’t decide if I am impressed that Google made it to Garrett County so quickly after the program started in 2007 or if I am disappointed that Google has not been back to update some places in 7 years. At this time, Garrett County nor Maryland is on the list for StreetView updates.
*Sigh* regardless of when Google decides to come back to GC and update our StreetView, Curb Appeal Marketing can certainly update your business. We are authorized and trained by Google to offer the StreetView technology to bring the 360-degree tour inside your business.
The StreetView technology is a great way for potential customers to get a first look at your business from the comfort of their home and a great way to help you optimize your online marketing strategy. How cool is that?
